The Oracle database consists of 3 types of operating system files used to store and retrieve information :
- Data files (contain the actual data)
- Online redo log files (contain a record of the changes to enable recovery)
- Control files (contain the information to maintain database integrity)
-
Other files which are not part of the database are also used by the server :
- Parameter file (contains the characteristics of an instance - ie size of memory structures in the SGA)
- Password file (contains the authentication information for the instance)
- Archived redo log files (offline copies of the online redo log files)
