- Internal components of routers
- IOS : Internetwork Operating System
- ROM : bootstrap code (set of instructions to load IOS)
- FLASH : IOS image loaded at start up
- NVRAM : start up configuration files
- RAM : currently running configuration
- Start up process : ROM loads IOS to FLASH + NVRAM loads RAM
- External components of routers
- Serial ports (WAN) --> routers to routers
- Console ports (access) --> management PC to router
- Ethernet ports (LAN) --> router to switches or PCs
- Auxiliary ports (modem connectivity) --> router to modem
- Power ports (electrical power) --> router to electrical socket
- DCE/DTE
- Data Communication Equipment (ie modem) --> clockrate (bandwidth in kbps) has to be configured
- Data Terminal Equipment --> no clockrate
- When 2 routers are linked together, one must be DCE and the other one must be DTE
- 3 modes
- User mode (= console mode) : basic mode to log in to the route
- Privilege mode (= enable mode) : mode to check the configuration and write to NVRAM
- Configuration mode : mode to configure the router and write to RAM
