- The Physical Layer (Layer 1) is in charge of transmitting data through :
- a medium (cable, wireless)
- a technique (baseband, broadband)
- a mode (half or full duplex).

The Datalink Layer (Layer 2), which works on MAC addresses, is in charge of synchronizing, detecting errors but not repairing (FCS - Frame Check sequence through parity bit) and identifying the packets coming from different operating systems (LLC - Logical Link Control). A frame is built as follows :
