- The OSI model (Open System Interconnection) acts as a common platform for different operating systems so that they can interact with each other. It is divided into 7 layers.

Encapsulation : process of attaching header and trailer with data so that an upper layer can communicate with the immediately lower layer.
- Decapsulation : process of removing header and trailer so that a lower layer can communicate with the immediately upper layer.

The TCP-IP model or DOD model (Department Of Defence Model) is an alternative model to OSI built as follows :
