  • performs instance recovery when the database is reopened after an instance failure
  • coalesces free space and deallocates temporary segments

Instance recovery consists of the following steps :
  1. rolls forward changes in online redo log files
  2. opens database for user access
  3. rolls back uncommitted transactions
