  • writes the dirty buffers from the Data Buffer Cache (where the server process records changes to blocks) to the data files when :
    • checkpoints occur
    • dirty buffers reach threshold
    • there are no free buffers
    • timeout occurs
    • RAC (Real Application Clusters) ping request is made
    • tablespace OFFLINE
    • tablespace READ ONLY
    • table DROP or TRUNCATE
    • tablespace BEGIN BACKUP
